The sundrenched rainforest gardens are filled with tropical trees and are a paradise for the numerous birdlife, especially at bird feeding time in the morning. Meticulously clean, spacious open-plan rooms include kitchen and lounge areas with terra-cotta-tiled floors and en-suites featuring ‘Gilchrist and Soames’ toiletries.

The house is surrounded by mango and frangipani trees and in season, guests delight in the freshly squeezed orange juice and off our own tree pulped mango juice at breakfast. The many bird baths are filled with frolicking lorikeet parrots through breakfast and during the long warm days here in the tropics.

After a day exploring the wonders of the area come home and relax with a cool drink by the pool, have a swim and enjoy the sun setting as the boats return to the marina below.

Wompoo Walk

'Wom-poo' is the sound made by the beautifully coloured Wompoo fruit-dove, so listen and see if you can spot one. The Conway National Park covers 225 kilometres of lowland tropical rainforest and a number of walking trails on the Conway Circuit (previously the Whitsunday Great Walk) have been created. Follow an old logging road 2.4 kilometres through tall, lush rainforest. Turn left to reach a calm creek lined with Alexandra palms. This 7 kilometre return walk has a few steep sections, shallow creek crossings after rain, plentiful wildlife and will take you about four hours to complete. The walking track is shared with mountain-bike and Segway tours. Closed annually from 1 February to 31 March and also subject to seasonal closures. How to get there: Brandy Creek Road is located about half-way between Airlie Beach and Proserpine off Shute Harbour Road. Follow Brandy Creek Road to the Forestry Road carpark. What to take: please wear walking shoes and take drinking water, insect repellent, sunscreen and a hat. It's also a good idea to always let someone know where you are going when you head off into the Australian bush. Mobile phone coverage may be weak or non-existent....

Whitsunday Transit is the mainland's major passenger transport service in the Whitsunday Region. Providing over 70 services per day in the Whitsunday area, the local bus timetable operates seven days a week. Whitsunday Transit operates a transfer service for passengers arriving at and departing from Whitsunday Coast Airport near Proserpine and Proserpine Railway Station. This means that regardless of the time of day or night, buses or coaches will be there to meet passengers for every flight and train. Local timetabled services run every 15 to 30 minutes along Shute Harbour Road, between Cannonvale, Airlie Beach, Port of Airlie and Shute Harbour, including stops at both Centro and Whitsunday Shopping Centres and Abel Point Marina. Up to eight services a day also run to and from Proserpine. The low-floor buses permit unrestricted access for passengers....

Peter Faust Dam is renowned as home to more 1m plus barramundi than any other impoundment in Australia! A combination of tropical climate with long summers and mild winters, the dam has no closed barra season so can be fished all year round and is annually restocked with over 20,000 barramundi fingerlings. The submerged branches and structure surrounding the lake make it the ideal spot for other species like sooty grunter, sleepy cod and saratoga. Local fishing tackle stores and guided trips are available all year round. Lake Proserpine plays host to fishing competitions, with campground accommodation at Camp Kanga closeby making it an ideal sports fishing destination. Bring your crab pots too because redclaw and freshwater crayfish also inhabit the lake. There is a concrete boat ramp to take craft up to 8m situated next to the BBQ areas. All this lies a short drive from Airlie Beach, the gateway to the famous Whitsunday Islands and Great Barrier Reef, so once you've had your fill of barramundi there are 74 Whitsunday Islands to explore off the coast. ...

Forests and woodlands range form distinctive poplar gum Eucalyptus alba woodlands and exotic Caribbean pine plantations on the creek flats to dense rainforests and tall wet eucalypt forest along the range. At Jaxut, the Pandanus Creek Track winds through lush rainforest upstream along the creek. Look out for the brilliant blue flashes of the Ulysses butterfly. You may also see other wildlife that lives in the rainforest, such as whiptails, agile wallabies and northern quolls....

Whitsunday Cairn

If you really want to get off the beaten track then this demanding walk up to a peak of Whitsunday Island may be just the answer. Not for the faint-hearted, this challenging four kilometre trail, from the northern most beach on the island, takes you back through time. Starting at Cairn Beach you will have a hard climb up through towering hoop pines and dry rainforest to a ridge where you will walk through drier open woodland dominated by giant grass-trees. Ultimately you will emerge onto a wind-exposed rocky outcrop below the towering Whitsunday Cairn for memorable views of Whitsunday Passage and the islands. There are triangular track markers along the way but no defined track so be careful, allow at least three hours to complete and only contemplate this exercise if you are a fit and experienced walker....

Located at the northern end of Hook Island, in the Whitsundays, Luncheon Bay is a lovely dive site where you can explore bommies, caves and crevasses in depths to 20 metres. While the visibility in the Whitsundays is not always the best, the corals and variety of marine life found in this large bay will impress. Every rocky outcrop is covered in corals, including beautiful soft corals, black coral trees, gorgonians and sea whips. Reef fish abound, but divers will also encounter trevally, Maori wrasse, gropers, sweetlips, moray eels, coral trout and quite a few nudibranchs. But also keep an eye out for whitetip reef sharks, turtles and the occasional manta ray....

Cedar Creek Falls

You will find Cedar Creek Falls about half way between Airlie Beach and Proserpine on Saltwater Creek Road. Set in a natural rock amphitheatre, you will enjoy spectacular waterfalls in the wet season and abundant flora and fauna including majestic white cedar trees, Alexandra Palms, wild orchids, colourful butterflies and many beautiful birds. The waterhole is an easy walk from the parking area and there are also bush walks up and around the falls for the more energetic. Share the cool, clear waters of the rock pool with fish, turtles, lizards and maybe a few other humans. Do: Take towel, bathers, hat, walking shoes, water, sunscreen and insect repellent. Langford Island

Langford Island, near Hayman Island in the northern Whitsundays is a popular spot with sailors, divers and snorkellers. Many of the bareboats and crewed sailing boats will anchor near Langford Island. Langford Island is relatively small, but features a long sand spit that all but disappears at high tide. This is an excellent spot for a picnic, sunbathing, swimming and snorkelling. The best diving is found on the north-western end of the beach where scattered bommies offer an interesting maze to explore and there are a few shallow walls at the eastern end of the island. The majority of fish life is small, but abundant. Expect reasonable protection from all but the strongest wind conditions and moderate tidal currents at all but slack tides. Snorkellers will enjoy the ability to snorkel straight off the length of the beach, with the best areas to explore being closest to the island....

The Stepping Stones are a series of more than 18 flat-topped coral pinnacles, looking much like their namesake from above, and offering a myriad of interesting channels and caves to explore. Each pinnacle is decorated with wonderful corals, including lovely gorgonians, sea whips and soft corals. Stepping Stones is a great place to encounter batfish, gropers, sweetlips, giant Maori wrasse, trevally, coral trout, turtles, reef sharks, moray eels, and an abundant variety of tropical fish darting between each pinnacle. Snorkelling across the tops of the pinnacles is stunning, as each is topped by pretty hard coral gardens....
